The expression ‘play it by ear’ originated in America, dating back to the 16th century. Its original reference was related to music. If you ‘play something by ear’, it refers to playing a piece of music after only hearing it, without reading the sheet music. A musician who could play a piece from memory or who could improvise it was also said to be able to play it by ear. In modern days, the expression has lost focus on music and can be used in any context.
